7 Benefits of Green Tea

Green tea has been used for over 4,000 years in China for medicinal purposes. It’s a great healthy hot or cold drink as an alternative to excess coffee consumption or to help increase hydration. It’s also been proven by multiple studies that it can be beneficial when dieting. Here are 7 benefits of green tea for general health and shrinking your belly.

1) Increased Metabolism

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition claims that drinking it as part of your every day diet can cause a metabolic rate increase of up to 4%. A natural chemical called Epigallocatechin (EGCG) within the tea, plus a little caffeine is reasons why it can cause a metabolic increase.

It’s been suggested that drinking 3 – 4 cups per day can equal an extra 70 more calories, approximately, that you’ll burn each day. Of course the amount of caffeine that’s in green tea is nowhere near the amount that’s in coffee, in fact it’s negligible. So it will still give you steady energy, but still allow you to sleep at night.

2) Controls Appetite, Reduces Blood Sugar and Increases Good Cholesterol

The EGCG that’s contained within can reduce the effectiveness of protein leptin and other properties that can increase your appetite, according to scientific research.

It can also lead to lower blood sugar levels, which means sustained energy throughout the day. NOT the energy spike you may be used too, which you can get from sugary foods or regular coffees. If you’re a chronic coffee drinker, I’d suggest switching to green tea. 1-2 quality espresso style coffees a day is fine, to no more than that.

The University of Pennsylvania conducted research suggesting that it can actually raise your levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) which is known to us as good cholesterol.

3) Great for Diabetes, Heart Disease and Blood Pressure.

Similar to the point above, green tea helps regulate glucose levels, slowing the rise of blood sugar after eating. This can prevent high insulin spikes that result in fat storage.

Scientists think green tea works on the lining of blood vessels, helping to keep them stay relaxed and better able to withstand changes in blood pressure, reducing the risk of high blood pressure.

It may also protect against the formation of clots, which are the primary cause of heart attacks.

4) Delay’s Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s 

Studies carried out on mice showed that green tea protected brain cells from dying and restored damaged brain cells. Good nutrition also goes along way here, but adding the no added sugar varieties of green tea may delay the deterioration caused by these diseases.

5) Anti-viral and Anti-bacterial 

Tea catechins are strong anti-bacterial and anti-viral agents which make them effective for treating everything, from influenza to cancer. In some studies green tea has been shown to inhibit the spread of diseases too.

6) Better Skincare and Less Tooth Decay

Green tea can also help with wrinkles and the signs of aging. This is because of their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities on the body. Both animal and human studies have demonstrated that green tea can help improve your skin. But also applied topically (as in on the skin in cream form) it can reduce sun damage.

Studies suggests that the chemical antioxidant “catechin” in tea can destroy bacteria and viruses that cause throat infections, dental caries and other dental conditions.

7) It Has Protein Properties for Relaxed Muscles

Green tea has what is known as “Theanine” which is an amino acid naturally found in tea leaves. It is this substance that is thought to provide a relaxing and tranquilizing effect on your muscles. Hence why tea drinkers are generally calmer, as apposed to coffee consumers.

If your goal is weight loss and shrinking your belly size, then I guarantee you will feel the benefits of Green Tea. Not only will you experience the above, but it will help to increase hydration. Plus it can be used to help replace bad habits, such as eating out of boredom and when you’re not actually hungry.

How much green tea should I drink?

When losing all my weight years ago, I was drinking drinking 2-3 cups of green tea per day, and now continue to this day having 1-2 cups. My unofficial research leads me  to believe that it’s helped me a lot, as well as helped my clients. If you don’t like the taste, then look for no-sugar flavoured version such as lemon, ginger, peach or Jasmine and start feeling the benefits of green tea today.
